Updated 16/10/23: Hot off the back of its Instagram teaser post, JJJJound has officially revealed its upcoming New Balance 878 NB Marathon Running Shoes Sneakers ML878CA. Dressed in a plethora of tonal blue and grey hues, the pair is inspired by the gloomy tones of autumn skies, while slivers of silver quite literally add a silver lining to the cloudy concept.

For those looking to get their hands on a pair, it's looking like they're set to be exclusive to JJJJound. Nevertheless, they'll be dropping on the 26th of October at 12pm EST if you are planning on trying your luck.

Working with everyone from New Balance, to Reebok to Salomon, it seems that everyone wants a taste of JJJJound’s less-is-more mentality. Now, the label is set to once again join forces with NB, for a fresh take on the Boston-based 2002R - New Balance 327 Primary Red.

Over the past few months, the Montreal-based moodboard-turned-design-studio has come repeatedly under fire for being somewhat of a one-trick pony. It’s recent Vans collaboration, in particular, was criticised for being ‘too minimal’ - as the pair consisted of plain white sneakers, and carefully hidden branding. The same could be said for its collaboration with Crocs. Here, two colourways boasted only the most subtle of details - with brass-toned hardware and debossed JJJJound branding at the strap.

However, there’s no denying that when JJJJound and New Balance come together, there is magic to be made. Having previously dressed various renditions of the 990v3, as well as the 991, it’s clear that the combination really brings out the best in each other. We’re not just talking about plain white or grey sneakers Frost - instead, we get beautiful tonal takes which marry New Balance’s timeless models with JJJJound’s penchant for minimalism. It’s the same to be said for this upcoming 2002R, too: arriving in tonal greys, with hints of cream and navy it’s not groundbreaking, but it is clean.

Say what you want about JJJJound’s minimalist collabs, but in an oversaturated sneaker scene, we’d much rather see more timeless-looking pairs than fleeting viral moments like MSCHF’s Big Red Boots.
